what is clean beauty?

"Clean beauty" is a term used in the cosmetics and skincare industry to describe products that are made without ingredients considered harmful or toxic to human health. However, the term isn’t regulated by any government agency, so its definition can vary between brands and retailers. Still, there are a few common ideas behind clean beauty:

Core Principles of Clean Beauty:

  1. Non-toxic ingredients
Clean beauty avoids controversial ingredients like parabens, sulphates, phthalates, formaldehyde, and synthetic fragrances—basically anything linked to potential health risks or skin irritation.
  2. Transparency
Brands that embrace clean beauty are typically transparent about what's in their products. They list all ingredients and often explain what each one does.
  3. Environmentally conscious
Clean beauty often overlaps with sustainability—think recyclable packaging, cruelty-free testing, and eco-friendly sourcing.
  4. Skin-friendly formulas
Since clean beauty avoids harsh chemicals, these products are usually gentler, making them a favourite for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Related but Different:

  • Natural beauty = uses ingredients from nature, but they’re not always safe or effective.
  • Organic beauty = uses organically farmed ingredients, but a product can be organic and still not be “clean.”
  • Green beauty = emphasizes environmental impact, not necessarily the safety of ingredients.
