We use BTMS in our solid hair conditioner bars, but what is it and where does it come from?
BTMS (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) is a mild, conditioning cationic surfactant commonly used in hair and skincare products. It is a natural plant based product derived from colza (rapeseed) oil and is known for its excellent conditioning and detangling properties.
Properties of BTMS
- Cationic (positively charged) – Sticks to the negatively charged surface of hair and skin, providing conditioning.
- Mild and Non-Irritating – Unlike harsher surfactants, BTMS is gentle and doesn't strip moisture.
- Good Emulsifier – Helps mix oil and water in creams, lotions, and conditioners.
- Anti-Static – Reduces frizz and flyaways in hair care products.
Common Uses of BTMS
- Hair Conditioners – Makes hair soft, smooth, and easy to comb.
- Leave-in Conditioners & Detanglers – Improves slip, making detangling easier.
- Lotion & Creams – Provides a smooth, non-greasy feel.
- Solid Hair Bars – Works as a conditioning agent in eco-friendly, waterless formulations.
BTMS Variants
- BTMS-25 – Contains 25% Behentrimonium Methosulfate, mixed with fatty alcohols for extra conditioning.
- BTMS-50 – Stronger version with 50% active ingredient, offering better conditioning and emulsifying properties.
How It Compares to Other Conditioners
- Gentler than silicones (e.g., dimethicone) but still provides smoothness.
- Less greasy than natural oils but still deeply nourishing.
- Unlike silicone-based conditioners, it is more biodegradable..
